do we need to get used cars from dealer checked by outside mechanic before buying?

I am considering buying a used car from a dealer. Do I need to get it checked by outside mechanic before purchasing it? Do dealerships usually allow the potential buyers to take it to an outside mechanic before purchasing it? Manufacturer warranty is about to expire and dealer is not giving any warranty.
